Between a Northerly pilgrimage to see Faust on spark-raising form in Manchester and joining with Glenn Boulter to perform at the FON Light Night event in Liverpool, Dave Dhonau and Jim Tetlow spent a suitably noise full Thursday evening at Withington, Manchester's 'The Noise Upstairs'. It's a monthly jam session at which, the blurb declares, 'names are pulled out, ensembles formed, and hearts broken'. In a format quite similar to Leicester's own monthly Quadelectronic (of which Jim and Dave a regular attendees), participants' names are drawn from a hat and the randomly selected trios improvised together. Unlike Quadelectronic, however, 'The Noise Upstairs' nights also boast a set from a different featured act each. This time it was a duo consisting of seasoned local improvisers Phil Marks and Richard Scott. Scott coaxed a range of compelling squelches from a bewilderingly complex electronic setup (largely controlled by customised Wii remotes), whilst Marks subjected his drum kit and percussive assortments to a frenetic, skittery battering. The evening was well attended, and was rounded off with a 'Jam du jour', featuring six of the participants and a convoluted set of rules based around the number 5.

Also, it should be mentioned, one of the jams featured a brand new electronic / percussive instrument constructed from a bike wheel, courtesy of Levenshulme Bicycle Orchestra.

A recording of Aurelie's 2008 Barrow AFC inspired mini opera is being exhibited this month as part of an exhibition at the Public Gallery in West Bromwich. 'State of Play' is an exhibition of paintings, photographs and sculptures by local, national and international artists on the theme of football curated by Colin Yates including work from the Professional Footballers Association collection.

The recording features Aurelie members David Dhonau, Francis O'Donnell Smith, Glenn Boulter, Ola Szmidt and actor Damian Rose.

The exhibition runs from May 12 2010 | July 11 2010 and admission is free.

Full of Noises is an evening of exciting new music taking place at Liverpool's unique open air venue, the Rockscape. Co-produced by Glenn Boulter and Liverpool Biennial as part of the Light Night, this free event brings together cutting edge music from Liverpool and beyond. The night will explore alternative forms of interaction between musicians and audience and will feature performances from the a.P.A.t.T. Orchestra, Noise Club, Aurelie and a Dj set from Andrew Ellis (Samizdat).

The a.P.A.t.T. Orchestra
The a.P.A.t.T. Orchestra is a musical ensemble of indeterminate size and instrumental content. An inclusive group for musicians of any background, the orchestra was formed to make traditionally ‘high-brow’ music more accessible to a wider audience. The orchestra performs time and space-specific music, including new work by local composers, and utilises the architecture of each venue as a compositional and performance tool. The a.P.A.t.T. Orchestra has performed works by John Cage, Steve Reich and Terry Riley, among others www.apatt.com

Noise Club
Formed in 2003 by three guys who met at a kung fu club, Noise Club is Liverpool's longest-running and most experimental noise group. Straddling the divide between stage performance and interactive intervention, the group creates dynamic soundscapes using homemade electronics, specially-constructed sonic sculptures, found objects, toys, plants, and even smells. Noise Club have played in a wide variety of unusual locations, from underground tunnels and public baths to shopping centres and public gardens, as well as more conventional stage performances. Samizdat
Andrew Ellis, a.k.a. Samizdat, has acted as a conduit for new and interesting music in Liverpool for the past five years. He has booked early shows for exciting emerging acts such as Foals and Deerhunter as well as acts from the independent music canon such as Liars and Charles Hayward, making Samizdat a hub for independent international acts in the north-west. The next leg of Aurelie's (miniature and somewhat chronologically dispersed) tour of the North found them in Leeds, in the ominously beautiful surroundings of The Left Bank, Formerly Known As St Margaret of Antioch Church. An intriguing lineup of acts included The Twilight Gatherers, Seed of Barrabas and Slimpro 6 and the Bobettes. The latter concluded the evening with a colourful trip which melded thunderous choral motifs, a custom built Altar of Plumbing, and what eventually turned out to be frying fish. A truly sacramental, description-defying feast for bewildered senses.

The personnel from Aurelie's previous outing reconvened, augmented this time by Neil Woodall on violin. The sextet developed upon the structure of their Lancaster performance climaxing the set in an abrasive squall of sound spearheaded by Mr Hall and the Bin Lid.

The event was the latest in the Digital Lunch series organised by digital arts organisation Folly:

"A programme of informal events connecting the Northwest's artists and creative practitioners to the FLI artists, their ideas and practice, is being developed as part of a new Upgrade programme in the region. Based on the premise of a Digital Lunch – a pilot event which was hosted during Andy Best's time in residence – these events will run throughout the residency programme. FLI artists will each host a Digital Lunch, gathering artists together to explore art, technology and culture over dinner. Digital Lunches are a ma-net Action Research Project supported by Arts Council England."

The evening featuring two improvisation sessions and an impressive array of food was attended by Aurelie's Glenn Boulter and a variety of South Cumbria based musicians and sound artists playing everything from a theremin to an egg slicer!

Aurelie performed a festive jig at Ulverston's Roxy Basement Bar in November of last year supporting a stunning set by fellow ex-of-Leicester experimentalists Volcano the Bear (Aaron Moore and Daniel Padden) against the unlikely backdrop of the annual Dickens fest...

The lineup on this occasion was Glenn Boulter on guitar, harmonium and the 'Ted Hughes Sheepboard', Jim Tetlow on keyboards and John Hall on laptop, Dickens samples and vinyl. John also took the opportunity to wheel out the mighty dustbin / gramophone feedback unit for it's first public appearance (see below).

Look out for a free MP3 of the closest thing Aurelie gets to a Christmas album in the near past/present/future featuring a digitised Scrooge, stillborn sheep and some angry sounding Buddhist trumpets...

Aurelie at ROH2 Firsts '09

Aurelie presented the latest incarnation of their open-scored Barrow AFC drone opera 'An Unorthodox 1-2' at the Royal Opera House Linbury Theatre in November of last year.

Firsts is an annual programme of performances from some of the most diverse and genre-defying artists in the UK today.

Originally commissioned by Bifocals Community Arts in 2008 as part of a residency at Barrow AFC, a twenty minute version of the piece was performed over two nights on 24th and 25th November to a full house of 400 people.

Aurelie captured in a rare moment away from the impressive ROH Canteen...

The lineup (left to right) featured the return of Barrow based actor Damian Rose (voice and live manipulation) and artist John Hall (Laptop and samples) in addition to Aurelie stalwarts Glenn Boulter (guitar and samples), Euan Rodger (percussion and electronics), Dave Dhonau (cello and guitar) and Ola Szmidt (flute and vocals).

The whole thing was captured for posterity by Endgame's Jim Tetlow, so watch this space for upcoming footage and details of a planned DVD edition compiling several performances of the piece.

Aurelie and Cardboard Lung at the Merzbarn

Aurelie's Glenn Boulter and John Hall (the Cardboard Lung) made their way up the A590 last Saturday to discuss the upcoming FON Festival at the annual Kurt Schwitters Herbst-Schule. The art/architecture conference took place in and around Kurt Schwitter's 'Merzbarn' at the Cylinders Estate near Elterwater. The event included a seminar on artist led learning projects, performances and discussions on the future of the Merzbarn.

Glenn and John performed on Saturday evening at the Merzzzoom Cabaret, employing laptops, amplified mixing bowl, buddha machine and a mangled Patti Smith cassette. Other acts included the Lakeland Fiddlers and East Lancs. band Funnel whose set featured rousing renditions of Ursonate and Anna Blume.

We'd like to thank Ian and Celia of Littoral for inviting us along to KS09 and look forward to collaborating in the future!

Post-Grimeborn Musings

Aurelie members convened in the capital this Monday for a performance of their football drone opera 'An Unorthodox 1-2'. Sharing the bill with composer Jenni Roditi, the piece was selected for the gala night of the Arcola Theatre's annual festival of alternative opera, Grimeborn.

Regular members Glenn Boulter, Dave Dhonau and Euan Rodger were joined by Barrow-based actor Damian Rose and artist/musician John Hall who was responsible for commissioning the piece as part of a residency at Barrow AFC in 2008. Endgame's Jim Tetlow was also on hand to document the performance.

The show played to a sold-out audience (including Swiss Aurelie fan Aurélie Emery and long-time anti-guitar campaigner Leon Cole) and featured some dextrous live looping from Damian accompanied by cello, crowd samples and electronics. The piece was warmly received, with the only dissenting voice coming from the Independent's hilariously ill-informed theatre critic Michael Coveney:

'Sounds of the terraces have twice been excitingly evoked by Andrew Lloyd Webber in Evita and The Beautiful Game, but Boulter and his gloomy half-hour serial score concentrates on the anomie of an abandoned pitch, wind rustling in the grass, a reiterated litany of unknown players, a solitary fan. We see all that on film while Damian Rose sits hunched over his paper in Barrow's blue-and-white strip and four musicians mix cello and percussion scratching with taped fragments.'

As Euan put it: "If we'd only had a glossy programme and someone ex-eastenders-now-secondary-character-in-the-Bill as the lead. Or perhaps we should try a bio-opera of Madonna in bronze age Britain?"

An evening of audio visual performances in the surroundings of Ulverston's immaculately preserved art deco cinema.

Andrew Deakin opened the proceedings screening John Cage's film 'One11' alongside a meditative electro-acoustic composition. Aurelie were up second with an outing for their piece 'Silence is Twice as Fast Backwards' in which a series of film subtitles are stripped of their images, providing the starting point for 5 group improvisations. Third was a song-based laptop and guitar set from Mondo Bongo (alias actor and musician Damian Rose) accompanying his own Barrow AFC-inspired visuals. The event culminated in a visceral performance by Good Noise Bad Noise that took Italian horror classic 'Suspiria' as the raw material for a series of intense audio-visual improvisations.

Dave Dhonau and Endgame's Jim Tetlow brave the crowd of pensioners for a quiet moment with Ulverston's finest ... followed by post gig ramblings in search of impressive lichen.

‘An Unorthodox 1-2’ combines field recordings, spoken word, and instrumental material to explore the aural environment of the ground from the physical sounds of the game to the emotional response of the crowd and the acoustics of the site. Inspired by his visits to the Holker Street ground, Glenn Boulter produced a series of texts that he later recorded with Barrow-based actor Damian Rose. Drawing on early radio dramas, these fragmentary monologues collage together adverts for defunct local businesses, found text from programmes and elements of local geography.

Edited and looped, the spoken texts form the starting point for three instrumental pieces, performed by Aurelie members Francis O’Donnell Smith (guitar, laptop, production), David Dhonau (cello, bass), Euan Roger (percussion, electronics) and Ola Szmidt (flute). Combined, the two elements attempt to capture the unique aura of match day in a Cumbrian town and to make explicit the idea of the game as a performance in its own right.

BAFC Night at the Canteen Cinema Room 13/11/08

Work from the Barrow AFC Digital Residency received a second showing last Thursday at the Canteen Cinema Room on Barrow Island. The evening included presentations of research materials and documentation from throughout the project as well as film screenings, a 'Bluebirds' DJ set and live performances.

Francis O' Donnell Smith's video installation based around an interview with life-long BAFC fan Geoff Payne screened to a live accompaniment from Glenn Boulter, Damian Rose and project organiser John Hall that reworked material from the spoken word and music piece An Unorthodox 1-2. This was followed by a live set of Bluebirds inspired music and video projections from Damian performing as Mondo Bongo. Each set was interspersed with scenes from two silent films from 1920's Germany (both amongst the first football feature films ever produced).

Aurelie performed live at Barrow AFC on Friday 17th October as part of an exhibition presenting work from their residency at the club.

On display were selections from Francis' video installation Unbridled, prints, hand-packaged Unorthodox 1-2 CD's, tracks made by Glenn with local schools using graphic notation and project organiser John Hall's edition of books charting the career of fictional Barrow player Al Mobility.

The live section of the event consisted of a talk by Francis and Glenn about their work, followed by a live performance of Unorthodox 1-2. This used a series of recorded texts as a starting point from which to improvise a series of drones based around the notes BAFC.

Differing considerably from the recorded version, the set featured Dave Dhonau on samples, thumb piano, radios and drum machine, Francis on laptop, guitar and effects and Glenn on prepared guitar.

Tracks by Aurelie were featured during September in an open air sound installation at the Heron corn Mill in Beetham, Cumbria. Curated by Cumbrian artist and musician John Hall, the piece also featured sounds made by children from Storth School and John Ruskin School as well as a track from mysterious Leeds-based group, the Wendigos.

An Unorthodox 1-2

During August and September, Aurelie spent time recording and editing the raw material for their Barrow AFC sound piece. The piece combines elements of spoken word, music and field recordings and is intended to be performed live, broadcast via radio and to exist as an edition of CD's. (See the project blog at: barrowafcdigital.blogspot.com for full details)

The script, written by Glenn, consists of three parts describing
a) a walk across Barrow to Holker St. stadium,
b) the atmosphere of the crowd during a match and
c) the experience of hearing the match in a domestic environment via radio. The script was then recorded with local actor, musician and Barrow supporter, Damian Rose.

Following this, the recordings were broken up into individual sentences, looped and processed to determine the rhythm and tone of three instrumental compositions. These were composed and recorded by Francis in collaboration with David Dhonau (cello and bass) and Ola Szmidt (flute). The three pieces of music, varying in tone from steadily building drones to minimalist cello melodies, were then edited together with the spoken word sections and sounds from a bank of recordings made at the ground to form the final recording.

Keep an eye on the blog for details of how to order the CD, as well as documentation of a live performance that took place at Holker St. during October. Further performances of the piece are planned, the first of which will take place at the Canteen Arts Media and Arts Centre in Barrow on Thursday 13th November.

Barrovian music-lovers were treated to a sneak preview of Aurelie's forthcoming football drone opera An Unorthodox 1-2 this Sunday at the annual Barrow Live festival. Adverts for defunct local businesses and bits of feedback drifted seagull-like from the precariously positioned 'acoustic kiosk' towards a largely unmoved crowd.

1. Processed guitar piece. Starts off unaccompanied. Euan and Dave to come in. Glenn to play stuttering guitar drones.

2. Conversation piece. To be directed by Euan. Instructions to follow...

3. E Nose and E Bows. Starts with single note guitar loops from Glenn. Ebows from Frank. Eaun and Dave to enter after 3 minutes or so and take it somewhere dark and unpleasant.

I've been listening to/reading about them a fair bit since we last played... it seems like a lot of their working methods might be quite relevant to what we're doing... see what you reckon. Continuing in a series of performances, which aren't quite enough in number to constitute a tour, Aurelie are due to improv the heck out of the Phoenix Arts auditorium on May 9th 2008. The live show will serve as an opener/accompaniment to an exhibition of lovely video art from various associate artists. Exhibition begins at 8pm, performance to start at 8.30pm. All are welcome and admission is free.

Aurelie performed at an (unintentionally) secret gig last Thursday for a crowd consisting largely of members of a local darts team who had wandered in from the tournament taking place next door. Aurelie in duo-mode performed three pieces using a limited palette of bowed guitar, processed radios and some epic Bitches Brew style trumpet blasts courtesy of Frank. This was preceded by a laptop set from Cardboard Lung and a live accompaniment to the Everton game improvised by both parties after the opening act failed to turn up.

As for me, busy with uni ( got to try and understand Advanced Computational intelligence, or at least convince other people I have - might just try sticking AI on the dvd player on repeat.) With le force (two - Count em honky- singles out), vid editing for American rappers, beatwriting for English rappers, taking in some live jazz courtesy of the Sole. Featuring celling on a new realease by moody Leicestrians "Her Name Is Calla", a record which, according to some "raise the bar of post rock above wot their peers are doijng" (that would be the MILKY bar, and high enough to make a limbo dancer nervous) Myspace em.

Yes. greatly looking forward to the 9th. Tis the day of my last hand in so soundcheck could be tricky. But on the plus side I'll be in high spirits so expect some lager shandies and uberfunk to be dropped that night. Wont be pretty I tell thee. Seriously though - I have a sweet new pick up for the cello, plus a boss looper so expect some tasty layers of dave. Most of the layers will be driven by a virulent hatred of Russell Bloody Hand... I mean Brand, whose annoying smarmy loathsome lotharious visage adorns seemijgly every newspaper / tv set in the country, and now (apparently) America too. Poo head.

On a lighter note (you'll like this Glenn) I bumped into Gregg Lucas, one of my old lecturers last week, who casually informed me that he had heard that I had just bought a house in Burbage. Lies, damned lies and... well Burbage. make of taht what thou wilst.

well, it's been some time. looks like we've all been on journeys. some near some far, some abstract and some... well, snotty. I have been nursing an explosive and needlessly spotty nose. Still it could be worse. I have not yet sought solace in the dubious pleasures of McDonald's deep fried "Festive Pies" (which, as my dear facebook will readers know I am still viewing with considerable distaste. or should that be disdain.) basically they are like the McDonald's apple pies, but filled with mincemeat and some form of custard. Yuck.

Got a lovely cd of images from Citeh Gallereh and Fireboog. From my friend and co-accortumnite Ola. May post a few up here to give youse all an idea.

Glenn- I trust yer settling in well. Let's make that recording happen. Alas, he has passed. All the good ones do. It's always a matter of time with these guys.
I particularly like newsnight reviews's tribute to him last night. Obviously on hearing of old Stocko's death they dispatched a wondering eyed work experience student to the dusty vaults below White City. He passed the war room, walking on passed the Aunty's Bloomers vault, past the vault made up entirely of footage of Des Lynam's ears, through the underground warehouse containing all the episodes of "Points Of View" where Terry Wogan falls asleep. Past Aunty's Christmas Bloomers where he finally arrived at the soft cardboard box marked "Weird Shit." Inside he managed to find a a grainy old VHS caked in muck.

The clip was played as the credits rolled after Mark Kermode had expressed his disgust in everything from the cultural offerings of the program to the studio decor and host's hairstyle. The clip the director had chosen was a passage of one of Stockhausen's more abstract numbers. It appeared to be played by the crew of the starship Enterprise. Blue velour polo necks was apparently what one wore to "shake shit up" on BBC2 in the 70s. It was so short it didn't make sense, fifteen seconds or so. I know he only died on wednesday but, c'mon Kirsty, sort it out.

I know he's up there, boring god to tears with aleatoric theories.
I'll miss you Karlheinz ol'bor, but not as much I miss Richard Pryor.

Any thoughts on the on Deutsche Bank eve? I'm sorry not to have been there but it was not to be, at least I finally got my drums tracks recorded for SchneiderTM/Lustfaust record.

I'm hoping we will get to play again before I head south for the winter. I'd love to break out the sp-555. Although navigating the instruction manual alone requires some kind of qualification (perhaps a GNVQ, advanced mind).

When would everyone be free for Ambient diagnostics and curry? I've only got a couple of gigs before I go and my rehearsal schedule looks suspiciously open. I suspect it will fill up with evenings spent individually wrapping my CDs (or Katy's ceramic oddities).

Any news on bringing culture to the carparks of the midlands? How about Liverpool?
I've also got some ideas of my own but I'll blerg them later.

Four pieces per set. Each piece will be assigned a small potato dumpling with a chili centre of varying intensity. Each performer will initiate a piece by consuming a dumpling. The degree of discomfort this affords him (on a scale of 1-8) will determine the next piece. Dave goes first.

Just had a quick listen to the recording of last night's frontier-chicken inspired set - one of the best yet I think. There's lots of contrast between the pieces and the way the set was structured makes the whole thing sound really coherent. More than 'sufficient for anybody' I would say.

Next: Crescent crockery at the ready to serve up some generous layers of Dave at the Deutsche Bank.
